Same same, but different

First of all, thanks for returning, despite my lack of postings the last couple of weeks! The new job is fun but as you know, starting a new work can be quite exhausting!
A couple of days ago I found a nice, elips shaped, glass table top in our recycle shed ( I love that shed!!) in the back yard. It had been a part of a hidious mid 90's sofatable (I found the legs too) but the top itself was pretty nice and just the perfect size for a new diningtable. I'm thinking about painting the glass on the downward side and add some nice legs to it.
One of my favourite places to go peeking for designerfurniture (that's right, just looking- totally out of my price range!) is HAY, and the have these really nice trestles I would buy if I could! They are also available as clothesracks and I like that it looks like they're are kind of "walking".
Anyways, IKEA has a pretty nice copy, Vika Lerberg, and I'll probably go for them instead, and find some other way to support Danish design!

Strange advise from a graphic designer (to buy bad and immoral copies). Do you copy good (original) graphic design as well? Or more importantly - would you like being copied (if it would ever happen to you)? Hay is a wonderful (and personal) company - and their investments in original (and innovative) design should be promoted and supported. Another low-grade cynical move from IKEA (shame on you).

Mikael - fist of all, this is not a blog where I advise people to buy this or that. This was simply my own reflection on two similar products.
I admit that the word copy was unfortunate, since it's actually not a copy at all. I should have used "similar product" instead. To an architect these two products are light years from eachother. Even I, who has little knowledge of the technical aspects of furniture design can see that these two products are not the same. The proportions are different, the assemblage of the different pieces are made differently (see the screws in the IKEA product?)and the Hay Loop legs didn't even come in the colour red. The laws of copy-right are tricky and even though a product might seem like a copy at first sight (especially if you are not an expert in the area which I'm not) it's the small details that decides if one of them is a copy. I understand that you feel strongly about this, I do too, but these two products are not aimed at the same customers. As a said in the post (that is more than one year old) alltough I admire the work of the Hay designers (Lars Jørgensen in this case) their products are often way out of my pricerange. But again, using the word copy in this post was not very well considered. (shame on me)

I find this to such a difficult -almost painful- discussion because for many of us money plays a big role - you have to find your own ways to support the good design (like writing about it on your blog and choosing good quality when possible) And even though i find some designs from companies like ikea or even more HM and TopShop to be too inspired by their original, i really appreciate being able to have good design at a price i can afford.
all that being said i do not think you can say these two products are a harsh case of coping since the ikea legs looks quite different when there is a tabletop on them (mine does anyway :))
